Scientists and the government believe face coverings and face masks play an important role in keeping the public safe, so they are expected to be made compulsory in stores, with a £100 fine if you’re caught without one.

The PM first hinted at this measure being put in place the other day, when he said:  “They have a great deal of value in confined spaces where you’re coming into contact with people you don’t normally meet.

“The scientific evaluation of face coverings and their importance on stopping aerosol droplets, that’s been growing, so I do think that in shops it is very important to wear a face covering if you’re going to be in a confined space and you want to protect other people and receive protection in turn.”

The PM also mentioned how even though it’s not law yet, people should be wearing face coverings in such environments, as it benefits everyone. He continued: “In terms of how we do that – whether we will be making that mandatory or not – we will be looking at the guidance, we will be saying a little bit more in the next few days.”

There was a lot of back and forth at the start of the pandemic about whether face coverings and face masks were really all that effective. But, new evidence has been discovered, and it seems they’re most effective at keeping other safe, from you. They’re more effective at stopping harmful germs coming out of a wearer than they are at stopping them going in.

The next few days will tell if they will become a necessary piece of protective clothing in shops, but it’s expected they will.
