After PM Boris Johnson has reportedly lost 1 stone throughout lockdown, the rest of the UK is being urged to take similar precautions to “save the NHS money”.

Brits are now being urged to lose at least 5lb, as it’ll save the NHS money. The coronavirus is discriminate, but it is especially cruel to those who are overweight and obese. In fact, obese people have a much higher percentage chance of dying from the virus than someone who is a normal weight.

Also, being overweight causes problems in itself – which the NHS could do without at the moment.

Health secretary Matt Hancock wrote in The Telegraph: “If everyone who is overweight lost five pounds it could save the NHS over £100 million over the next five years.

“And more importantly, given the link between obesity and coronavirus, losing weight could be lifesaving.”

In the video above, the PM speaks about how his scare with coronavirus made him realise he needed to care for his body more. Junk food adverts are set to be banned in the UK soon too, in a bid to keep people healthier.

He also said to the BBC: “One thing, by the way, that I think did make a difference – for me and for quite a few others – is the issue, frankly, of being overweight.

“And that’s why we need to tackle our national struggle with obesity.”

He continued: “Losing weight is hard but with some small changes we can all feel fitter and healthier.

“If we all do our bit, we can reduce our health risks and protect ourselves against coronavirus – as well as taking pressure off the NHS.”

There are set to be many more promotions and measures put in place to keep people healthy and help others to become healthier, such as purchase offers on healthy food.
