According to the government, if you’ve been working from home recently due to the coronavirus, you could be due as much as £156.

Some people have been spending more on bills due to working at home.

Coronavirus has left many of us still working from home. And, if you’re working from home through no choice of your own, you may be able to claim back some tax by using electricity and gas as business expenses.

Not everyone knows this, but earlier this year the government announced that employers could pay a home working employee up to £6 extra a week to cover costs such as electricity and gas. However, you can’t claim money on things you don’t specifically use for home work, such as broadband. You likely can’t claim back your whole electricity or gas bill either – only up to £6 a week, probably.

But, if you’ve been working from home since the announcement was made in April, you could be due up to £156.

The government website says: “You may be able to claim tax relief for some of the bills you have to pay because you have to work at home on a regular basis. You cannot claim tax relief if you choose to work from home.

“You can only claim for things to do with your work, for example, business telephone calls or the extra cost of gas and electricity for your work area.

“You cannot claim for things that you use for both private and business use, for example, rent or broadband access.

From 6 April 2020 your employer can pay you up to £6 a week (£26 a month) to cover your additional costs if you have to work from home. For previous tax years the rate is £4 a week (£18 a month).

You will not need to keep any records.

As mentioned before, you can only claim if you’re being made to stay at home. You can’t claim if you’re voluntarily working from home. If you’re still confused about whether you’re eligible for some money, click here to visit the government website.
