Scottish Championship January Roundup

Ross County Top

Ross County despite having a bit of a shaky month have maintained their lead at the top of The Scottish Championship, thanks largely to nearest challenger Ayr United also struggling. The month started badly with two consecutive away defeats 1-0 at Morton and then 4-0 at Queen of the South. A morale-boosting 2-1 away win at Premier League Motherwell has steadied the ship and thanks to a 2-0 win over struggling Alloa the ended the month three points clear.

Ayr United who started the month with games in hand proceeded to lose three out of the four league matches, all by the odd goal, and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by non-league side Auchinleck Talbot despite dominating the game and only allowing their opponents one shot on target.

In The Playoffs

Third-placed Dundee United had the chance to go level with Ross County albeit briefly when they travelled to Ayr, however their 1-0 defeat coupled with Ross County’s win left them six points adrift going into February.

Greenock Morton starting January in the final promotion play-off spot, however, they had played more games than their nearest challengers and despite an excellent opening month when over leaders Ross County disappointing performances against Alloa and Dunfermline saw them slip to 6th in the table.

The fourth play-off place is currently held by Queen of the South who had an up-and-down month which included an excellent 4-0 win over league leaders Ross County, but also included a 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Partick Thistle. Their hold on fourth place is quite tenuous and only one point separates them from sixth place Morton.

Relegation Threatened

At the bottom it remains pretty much as you were with Partick Thistle and Falkirk in the relegation places, with Alloa & Dunfermline looking over their shoulders. Falkirk had a good January though winning at Ayr and drawing their other two games. They may be poised to move up the table especially if Alloa continue to struggle. The two meet on the 9th of February in what will be a classic 6 pointer.
