Premiership Title & Final Champions League Place Still Up For Grabs

Premiership Title & Final Champions League Place Still Up For Grabs

With two games left the Premier League and Champions League spots are still up for Grabs, for different reasons.

Premier League Title.

Both Liverpool and Manchester City had the lead over the weekend with Liverpool temporarily going top thanks to an emphatic 5-0 win over on Friday night. This moved them onto 91 points which would have been enough to win the title most seasons, however, Manchester City regained top spot with a narrow (by all definitions) win at Burnley on Sunday. City have their destiny in their own hands but will probably have to beat both Leicester & Brighton to secure the title.

Liverpool who have the added (if pleasant) distraction of a Champions League Semi-final against Barcelona coming up will need to win out and hope for a slip-up.

Champions League Places.

As we discussed last week it seems like no one seems to want the final Champions League places and after another weekend of dropped points theoretically two of Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United can still clinch the spots. Amazingly the four of them combined have won one of their last 11 games, and they all dropped more points again this weekend.

Tottenham looked nothing like their normal selves when losing 1-0 at home to London Rivals West Ham on Saturday and will have to up their game for the Champions League Semi-Final if they are to have any hope of progressing against a surprisingly good Ajax side. As things transpired they could have clinched a place with a win, but now must get at least another point to be almost sure from their last two games. Their superior goal difference should be enough.

Arch London Rivals Arsenal looked awful in their 3-0 drubbing by Leicester and looked like a team more concerned with Tuesdays Europa League Semi Final against Valencia. That makes it four defeats in five and more worryingly only their keeper stopped the score from becoming embarrassing.

The final two with a chance at a place Manchester United & Chelsea fought out a 1-1 draw, which put Chelsea in the driving seat for fourth as they have a better goal difference and are 3 points clear of United. They have a Europa League Semi Final coming up against Eintracht Frankfurt and like Arsenal could end up fifth and still qualify as Europa League winners.

So it looks like an exciting end to the season is on the cards.
