What’s The Meaning For Each Finger For A Ring?

Left Pinky Finger – Marital Status and Mafia

Two rings on the left pinky finger once indicated that a man was married. The bottom ring was the wedding ring, followed by the signet ring on top. This has now fallen out of fashion, with not many people keep up with the tradition.

Left Ring Finger – Marital status and others

Obviously, this is best known as the standard wedding ring finger. But the left ring finger is also used for other things.

Some people choose to wear a promise ring on the left ring finger, although this is usually reserved for serious romantic promises.

Many people also choose to wear a chastity ring, or purity ring, on the left ring finger. This signifies no intimate contact before marriage.

Left Middle Finger

This doesn’t necessarily represent anything. But it can suggest power and responsibility, and it makes a small statement when is on there.

Left Index And Left Thumb

These have no real representation. Except for statement rings really. Thumb rings are usually worn (in the past) by powerful people, and both finger and thumb are usually shown off by a big statement ring.

Right Thumb

As before, this has no meaning. Statement rings are often worn on there but it has no real cultural meaning, just fashion.

Right Index Finger

In some cultures, this can represent marriage actually. According to Chabad.org, “the index finger is the proper place for the wedding ring in a traditional Jewish ceremony. Typically, a plain gold band goes on the index finger of the right hand.”

Right Middle Finger

Just like the left middle finger, this one is left up to interpretation! It has no real cultural significance and it can be quite uncomfortable to wear rings on a middle finger to be honest.

Right Ring Finger

Crazily enough, this finger can also symbolise marriage as well! In some countries, the bride and groom bear the wedding ring on the right finger as opposed to the left. Where you might be wondering?Germany, Russia, India, and many others practice this tradition.

Right Pinky – Profession

The right pinky finger is more often found with a ring on it to the left in the case of graduates! This is because, for some reason, graduates in fields such as engineering and ecology find it fitting to wear one. Rings on this finger are usually made of standard materials such as gold, silver, brass and steel.
