Perhaps the best feel-good story of 2018 was the discovery and ultimate rescue of 13 members of the Wild Boars football team in Northern Thailand. The boys became trapped in a cave that they entered whilst relatively dry, but which became quickly inundated by monsoon rains.

The first film telling the story of the extraordinary events of the 9-day rescue is about to be released. The film, ‘The Cave’ is the brainchild of the Thai-Irish Producer-Director, Tom Waller. Waller’s film puts the focus on the vital roles played by certain individuals and how their efforts together, contributed to getting the boys out. The film uses many of the ‘real’ people from the rescue including divers, Jim Warny (Belgium), Erik Brown (Canada), Mikko Passi (Finland) and Tan Xioo Long (China). Members of the Thai tourist police and the local community also appeared guaranteeing the film’s accuracy and authenticity.

Waller’s film shows how the various rescue teams worked together, mostly harmoniously but sometimes having to overcome different cultural sensitivities and expectations which presented a further challenge. The film recreates the rising tension as the divers raced against time and the most difficult conditions imaginable to find the boys. But, finding them was only half the story, the next question was just how to get them out? Several of the boys couldn’t swim, certainly, none had any experience of using diving breathing equipment!  So, just how do you get them out of more than 4km of mostly flooded passages?
