PlayStation Classic Relive Those Halcyon PS1 Days

Those of us who are into retro games or have been gaming for a while will have fond memories of Sony launching the then ground-breaking PlayStation One back on 3 December 1994. Fast forward 24 years and on December 3 2018 they will be releasing the PlayStation Classic, nicely in time for the holiday season.

This mini version of the retro classic (it’s less than half the size of the original) will come preloaded with 20 full games, and although we are slightly surprised at some of the omissions this will be welcomed by many seasoned gamers wanting to take a trip down memory lane and will also serve as a great introduction to a new generation.

The games on offer cover a wide gamut of genres, with everything from puzzle and racing games to all action fighters and classic stealth games. Although we are pleased with the selection we are surprised (and slightly disappointed) that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was not included, which is one of our favourite all-time retro games. However, there is some good news here in that Konami have released a digital-only Castlevania Requiem collection for the PS4, which includes this and Rondo of Blood both in scaled up versions to take advantage of the PS4’s capabilities. We were also little surprised that Silent Hill and Tomb Raider have been omitted. The full list is:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

It is being launched with a recommended retail price of $99.99 (£89.99) which works out at less that $5 per game – a real bargain especially given it comes with Two full-size controllers and both HDMI & USB cables meaning there’s no hidden extras to buy.

Classic Games Console

It is available for pre-order on Amazon with a price guarantee meaning if they drop the price before launch they will match it.

Ours is on order and we will have some demos and tutorials upon our YouTube Channel in due course. But in meantime you can get a flavour of what to expect from the official trailer:
