Today is World Emoji Day which is a day to celebrate emojis: have a party, correspond only with emojis, sing the official anthem and more. Created by Jeremy Burge, founder of Emojipedia in 2014, the date is based on the fact that the iOS calendar emoji features that date.

On the 17th July 1955 Disneyland, America's first theme park, opened in Anaheim.

On this day in 2015, marks the anniversary of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 being shot down. The international flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down by pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists, killing all 298 passengers and crew. The aircraft crashed near the Russian-Ukrainian border, during the military conflict that has engulfed the region.
