Today is Independence Day in Argentina where they celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of an independent republic, with independence from Spain in 1816. South Sudan celebrate the same, after almost 50 years of civil war resulting in millions of casualties, South Sudan declared its independence from Sudan on the 9th of July 2011.

On this day in 1893 on the South Side of Chicago, IL, African-American surgeon Dr Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful open-heart surgery.
