Today is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, the day's purpose is to promote public awareness of the need for international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought and the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

In Iceland, they celebrate a National holiday as the anniversary of the founding of republic and independence from Denmark in 1944. The day is celebrated with a major festival, especially in Reykjavik. Parades, competitions and street dancing take place across the city.
