11th July - On this Day

What does the 11th July have to offer, well on this day...

Today is the United Nations World Population day. This day seeks to focus public attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, particularly in the context of overall development plans and programs and the need to create solutions to these problems.

On this day in 1979, the Skylab Spacecraft fell to earth Expectation was that 20–25 tons probably would survive to hit Earth, including one piece of about 5,000 pounds. This forecast generated intense international public interest in where it would fall. The chance that a piece of Skylab would hit some person was calculated at one in 152. Targets were drawn, and Skylab parties were held, but Skylab broke up and fell to Earth in a shower of pieces over the Indian Ocean and Australia, with no known casualties.
