Greek Mythology: Poseidon

Poseidon was mainly known as the god of the sea, however he is also known for being the god of earthquakes, storms and horses. Though out Greek mythology he is portrayed as one of the most bad- tempered, greedy and moody of all Olympian gods. He is also well known for being vengeful against others when insulted.

He is the son of Cronus and Rhea and has three well known brothers which divided the world into three areas. They are Zeus god of the sky, Hades god of the underworld then Poseidon god of the seas.

In his art he is seen to carry a trident  or a three-pronged spear. It was said that he could strike the ground with his trident and cause earthquakes, This later on earn him the nickname ‘ Earth-shaker’

The symbols which resemble Poseidon are the trident, dolphins and a wave these are the most commonly linked to him.
