The USA retained the Women’s World Cup with an efficient performance over the Dutch at the Olympic Stadium in Lyon last night. Having reached the final comfortable with some devastating performances including a record 13-0 win over Thailand, they initially looked a bit rattled by the Netherlands strong and determined tackling, however, a VAR awarded second-half penalty slotted home by Golden Boot winner Megan Rapinoe ended the resistance. Rose Lavelle sewed the game up with a goal worthy of the occasion a few minutes later and had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping from van Veenendaal in the Dutch net the score could have been much higher.

Overall there was no doubt that the USA deserved the win and even the penalty was undisputable once the video replay had been viewed, although without this it could easily have been missed. The final stats showed the USA having 10 shots on target to the Netherlands one and although the possession was more evenly balanced it was more often played in the Dutch half. So the USA retain the Women’s World Cup and maintain their dominance of the tournament which now reads 4 wins beaten finalists once and third place in the other 3 playings.

Anyone who has watched the tournament couldn’t fail to have been impressed both with the standard of football and the spirit the games were played in (with the exception of the Cameroon v England game of course) and this can only serve to enhance the status of Women’s Football at all levels going forward.
