Hundreds of thousands of tumble dryers with a fire risk as still placed in peoples homes. Around 65,000 dryers have been found during the recall campaign by Whirlpool. The company said it was vital owners got in touch “as a matter of urgency”.

The manufacturer extended its safety programme and offered free replacements in July after four years since the issue emerged.

Whirlpool are recalling some of the tumble dryers sold under its Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline brands.

Whirlpool vice president Jeff Noel said: “We’re hugely grateful to everyone who has come forward so far, but, if there are people still out there with affected dryers, please contact us immediately.

“Nothing matters more to us than people’s safety, so it’s absolutely vital that we can identify where these affected dryers are and resolve the issue.

“We can assure consumers that we are doing everything we can, and that we can quickly provide a remedy as soon as they get in touch.”

Anyone who thinks they have one of the dangerous dryers should call call 0800 151 0905 or visit a dedicated website to check if their dryer is affected. Once you have sorted it with the company you can then choose:

  • A free replacement dryer with no extra charges for collection or disposal of the old machine
  • A free, one-hour modification of the old machine
  • A discounted upgrade to a higher specification model than the free replacement
  • A partial refund of up to £150, with owners of older machines getting less than those with newer ones
