A man has recently auctioned 28 bottles of whisky that his dad bought him over the years.

Matthew and Pete, pictures together.

Since his birth, 28 year old Matthew Robinson has been given a bottle of 18 year old Macallan whiskey every year for his birthday by his dad, now 64 year old Pete.

Pete has Collectively spent over £5000 on the collection, which she started in 1992 when Matthew was born. Now, though, the collection is worth over £40,000 – that’s some pretty expensive booze!

As the whiskey brand grew in popularity, older and more exclusive bottles gained value. And, with the amount of whiskey Matthew has been sitting on, he has clearly benefited from this!

Speaking about the gifts, he said: “I think it’s been one of the best things he could have done.

“I never anticipated the potential it could have for me in my life.“

Neither could anyone else, really. Experts claim this is a unusual thing to happen, and simply buying bottles every year like Pete did doesn’t usually end up with you sitting on a fortune in 30 years.

Matthew continued: “I’m currently looking at buying houses and having that money available to me is a massive weight off my shoulders – especially in these uncertain times.

“It’s just very special.”

What probably made the gifts all the more special for Pete is that he works in the Malting industry himself, which means he probably had a part to play in the making of his sons alcohol.

Malt company manger Pete revealed: “Looking at the bottle, I realised that it would be quite interesting to collect 18 bottles over 18 years and then give my son the final bottle, which would be his birth year.

“I also liked the idea that the materials I made would eventually be used in the making of the scotch.

“As time went by, I realised that the collection was starting to appreciate in value considerably and watched the brand with more interest.”

The bottles are now being auctioned online for £40,000 by a brokerage. Every bottle comes with the original packaging and papers, meaning their value will likely continue to rise if they’re kept in this state.

Mark Littler, the auction brokerage, said: “In the whisky and wine world, we call a consecutive run of vintages a vertical.

“Normally it would take a lot of time and effort to amass a vertical like this, but this is
the opportunity for a collector to purchase them all instantly.

“In addition the Macallan 18-year-old is currently one of the most sought-after single malt Scotch whiskies in the world, so you’ve got a hot ticket item that is sure to be highly desirable to aspiring whisky collectors and investors.”
