Passersby found the belongings of Hugo Palmer and Erwan Ferrieux on a beach north of Sydney on Monday. Police searched the beach and discovered the pair’s rental car nearby. Other personal items including travel documents were found in the vehicle.

Police began a ground and water search on Monday but found no signs of both 20-year-olds. The two men knew each other from attending school together and had been travelling along the New South Wales coast.

It is believed both men had went for a swim on and had arrived in Port Macquarie on Sunday 7th February. Glasses, keys and wallets were found on the beach.

The search for the two men will be continued.

A New South Wales Police spokesman said: “Based on advice from experts, police have scaled back the air and sea search, but sweeps of the coastline and foreshore will continue over the coming days.”

Insp Peter Neville said: “This whole operation is about locating and rescuing these young men. From some of the discussions I’ve had this morning we honestly believe these people could well be alive,”

“At the moment this is strictly a rescue mission.”
