In the early hours of this morning, Anjem Choudary was released from prison. He is to serve the remainder of his sentence outside of prison.

He was sentenced to 5 and a half year in prison in 2016 for inviting support for the Islamic State group, and is set to spend the rest of his sentence under close supervision outside of bars.

Choudary, from east London, once headed up the al-Muhajiroun network, which is a leading extremist group and was banned under terrorism laws. The killers off Lee Rigby were known to be associated with this network.

The father-of-five did not organise terror attacks, but is considered one of the UK’s most prominent radicalisers.

He’s previously been described as a “hardened dangerous terrorist” and someone who has had a “huge influence on Islamist extremism in this country” by the former Met Police terror chief Richard Walton.

There has been lots of anger and controversy surrounding his release, and many Britons are upset regarding it.
