A police officer who was investigating a report of social distancing violations was attacked in a park – by the very people he was investigating.

The park where the incident took place.

The attack happened In West Byfleet Park outside south-west London at 7.40pm, Surrey police have said.

The officer was later taken to hospital with minor injuries to his wrist and hear, after he was attacked by multiple young men whilst engaging with them.

He was only there to follow up on a social distancing violation.

Three people have since been taken into custody, one adult, and two younger men.

There has been an increase in social distancing breaches recently, but it was bound to happen as lockdown measures got less strict. People are now allowed to meet with a single person outside of their immediate household to chat outdoors or exercise, but they must stay at least 2m away.

Multiple reports show that people are meeting up, in larger groups than allowed, and not social distancing – something that could cause restrictions to tighten again.

But, in regards to the police incident, any witnesses were asked to call police on 101, quoting PR/ 45200052505.
