A Swedish man has been jailed for 6 and a half years after he sent a nearly lethal homemade bomb to a London Bitcoin firm.

The man, who has been identified as Jermu Michael Salonen, has faced a number of charges, including sending a “white powder” to the Prime Minister in 2017. When investigating the case, the Met police said they could only find a single motive for the attempted bombing. He had emailed the company, Cryptopay, in August 2017, and asked that he be sent a new password. Cryptopay then refused, saying this violated its privacy policy. It was delivered to an office in Hackney at some point in November 2017, which used to house an accountancy firm previously used by Cryptopay. It was only several months later in March that an accountancy employee began to open the package; but stopped when they became suspicious of what was inside.

A spokesman for Cryptopay reached out to the BBC and said: “We are relieved that no one from The Accountancy Cloud team was hurt in this incident. None of our employees have ever worked at that address. The vast majority of our employees work remotely across Europe, but we are implementing additional security measures to prevent any potential harm to our employees anyway. We are thankful for both British and Swedish police, who were able to investigate the case with outstanding professionalism.”

Thankfully no one was hurt in this shocking and unprovoked attack.
