A General in the Quds Force was killed by the USA in an airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport.
Iran has vowed “severe revenge” for the killing. The Pentagon said “President Trump ordered the killing because the general was developing plans to attack Americans.”
The General has been named as Qasem Soleimani, and the US Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens to “depart Iraq immediately” following the strike.

Joe Biden described the attack as a “hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region” and said President Donald Trump had “tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox”.
“We could be on the brink of a major conflict across the Middle East,” he wrote.
