The UK has been told that if they want their freedom back, everyone must get the vaccine.
The vaccine which has been approved for use in the UK recently has shown signs of being over 90% effective, which is good news. However, not everyone wants to take it due to the uncertainty surrounding long term effects.
After some research into the process, it seems that no corners were cut in the testing of the vaccine, and there were no special measures imposed that allowed it to be rolled out quicker. We must remember the speed that the vaccine was created comes down to previous knowledge about similar viruses, and the fact it had the whole worlds attention and funding.
The UK’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jonathan Van-Tam,said he knows people are “fed up” with the restrictions, and says they can all go away if everyone just takes the vaccine.
“If you want that dream to come true as quickly as it can come true, then you have to take the vaccine when it’s offered to you,” he said in a press conference.
“Low uptake will almost certainly make restrictions last longer.”
He did, however, warn that a life without COVID-19 entirely may never be possible.
“I don’t think we are going to eradicate coronavirus ever – I think it is going to be with humankind forever,” the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said.
He concluded by saying that he believes it will become a seasonal disease like the flu and common cold, and that this vaccine isn’t necessarily a “victory”, as it’s still going to be present in the UK.
The most vulnerable groups will get the vaccine first, such as the sick and elderly, before it is rolled out to the rest of the population.
