NY Mets Star Jacob deGrom had a game he won’t forget in a hurry at the Marlins last night. Not content with striking out 14 batters – the first to achieve such a feat since John Maine, in Sept 2007 who ironically also did it against the then Florida Marlins, but he also hit a home run. The home run was only the second of his career with the other coming back in 2017.
He now has a 26 “Quality Start” streak going to matching Bob Gibson’s record from the 1967-68 seasons. A Quality Start is one where the pitcher throws at least 6 innings and allows no more than 3 earned runs and although its merits are open to interpretation it is still a nice addition to his resume. He was the well-deserved winner of the NL Cy Young award last year and if he keeps this up then a repeat in 2019 looks on the cards.
