Five Instant Tricks to Liven up a Dull Boundary Wall.

Five Instant Tricks to Liven up a Dull Boundary Wall.

Liven up that Dull Boundary Wall.

Let’s be honest nothing looks duller than a plain brick wall, probably because we see so many of them. However, if your garden boundary comprises one of these then the following tricks can turn them from dull to interesting really quickly and at relatively little cost. This also works well on internal walls be they interior dividers or part of the main residence.

  • Use panels of trellis to break up a plain surface this will give a 3-D effect and especially when the sun is shining, create attractive patterns of light and shade. There are also useful for supporting climbing plants.
  •  Parallel wooden batons of different lengths fixed to a wall can create interesting patterns and shadows. Use the same colour as the wall for a subtle effect, on a contrasting colour for a bit more drama.
  •  Attach galvanised wire to make geometric patterns, diamond shapes, zigzags etc. They add immediate interest, and in the long term, you can train plants such as small leafed Ivy along the wires for additional interest. Keep it well trimmed to emphasise the shapes.
  • Screw cut out decorative MDF (medium density fibreboard) or wooden panels to the wall. These can be custom made or bought off the shelf and a wide variety of designs are available in most garden centres. With a little creativity, this can look spectacular.
  • Paint an all brick wall with masonry paint and hang galvanised metal wall planters and watering cans on it for an interesting look.
