Don’t Forget the Fences When Designing Your Garden

Brighten Up That Fence

Fences tend to be one of the more overlooked areas of the garden however with a little bit of creativity they can really augment any landscaping effort. The following tips can be used either for a new fence or to revitalise an existing one.

Use Colour.

The choices here tend to be wood stain through which the grain of the wood will be visible, or specifically formulated external woodwork paint which will not only cover the fence but in all probability increase its resistance to the elements. Both are available in a wide range of colours and can be themed to suit your planting choices. If you want to be really adventurous and have a bit of time on your hands you can use natural ingredients to make a statement such as beeswax, turpentine or even natural pigments in Danish oil to make your own unique colour and style.

Bring Some Uniformity

If you want to bring some unity to mismatched fences the simplest option involves buying rolls of split reed or split bamboo and stating this to the fence posts is particularly attractive if an oriental style garden.

Style Considerations

If you have a contemporary garden look in mind plain panels of thin marine plywood fitted flush to fence posts with metal brackets captures that feel. You can then stain or paint the wood in colours to suit. For a more formal architectural look think fixed beading on the panels then paint. The beading will need to be attached with waterproof adhesive and it is worth putting a few panel pins in for additional security.

Whatever style you are looking for, you can use more than one colour of paint, do it judiciously. For instance, paint the posts and top rail one colour and the panels another, or paint alternate slats in different colours to give a nice rhythm. Using lighter and darker tones of the same shade gives an interesting yet subtle effect.

Also consider any geographical variations, for instance, if you fancy an oriental style courtyard garden, lacquered red posts and black panels are a good place to start.

Finishing Touches.

Adding finishing touches to fences can really add interest think carved wooden finial balls, pyramids etc. which turn ordinary fence posts into architectural features and hanging decor can also add an interesting touch.
