Scottish Premiership January 2019 Roundup

Celtic Top After Better January

January began with one of the closest Scottish Premier league tables in many years, with Celtic top on goal difference from old firm rivals Rangers, Kilmarnock a point behind and Aberdeen in fourth only three points off the lead. However, this was short lived as Celtic racked up three wins in seven days scoring 10 goals in the process and not conceding any. They rounded out January 6 points clear and with a commanding goal difference.

The Quest For Europe

Kilmarnock one January’s big game in Scotland coming from behind to beat Rangers 21 despite being somewhat outplayed. They finished January level on points with Rangers but behind them on goal difference, it will be interesting to see how Kilmarnock fair now that they have lost Greg Stewart who had been a revelation since joining them on loan from Birmingham.

Aberdeen end of January 2 points behind Kilmarnock and Rangers having picked up four points from their two games played that month.

Best Of The Rest

Hearts started January 6 points off the lead and five points behind Kilmarnock in the final Europa League place. They only played two league games in January, losing at home to Dundee and then, more importantly, beating St Johnstone who had temporarily leapfrogged them in the table. January ended with them being six points behind Kilmarnock, but comfortably in the top six.

St Johnstone edged into fifth place at one stage but consecutive two nil defeats to hearts and Celtic has left them in sixth place.

Hibernian, Livingston & Motherwell remain in limbo land, unlikely to make into the top six when the division splits, but barring a disaster will not be involved in the relegation battle

Relegation Places

Much as it’s been all season it’s any two from three at the bottom with three points separating bottom club St Mirren from 10th place Hamilton and 11th place Dundee was the only one of the 3 to pick up any points in January.
