Aldershot Town F.C.

Aldershot Town F.C.

Aldershot Town FC – or The Shots as they are nicknamed are a fairly recent addition to the world of football. Well in their current guise anyway having been formed phoenix-like from the demised Aldershot FC who were wound up in 1991-92. Despite their predecessor being stalwarts of the lower reaches of the football league since the early 1930s, the new club had to begin life anew in tier 9 of the football league pyramid the Isthmian League Division Three (then the Diadora League Div 3).

Aldershot Town

Two successive promotions saw them playing in the Isthmian League Division one and after 4 seasons of consolidation, they went into the Premier League as Champions in 1997-98. Again some consolidation was needed before they once again promoted as champions to the National League (tier 5) in 2002-03.

The Conference Years

Aldershot Town made an immediate impact at this higher level, reaching the playoffs for a return to the Football League in both 2003-4 & 2004-5. In the 2004 final they were unlucky losers on penalties in the final which was played at Stokes Britannia Stadium while Wembley was under redevelopment. They were also semi-finalists in the FA Trophy that year losing 3-1 on aggregate to eventual winners Hednesford Town.

They also enjoyed some FA Cup success during this period, reaching Round Two, three years in succession and of course the 3rd round for the first time ever (as Aldershot Town anyway) in 2006-07. Here, after a relatively easy path against fellow non-league teams, they were drawn away to Blackpool, who won the match 4-2.

Champions Again

The 2007-8 season will long be remembered by Aldershot fans, as they marched back into the Football League as champions, amassing 101 points in the process! This was their 4th title in their then 16 seasons in existence and their 5th promotion. they also reached the FA Trophy Semi-Finals, again losing to the eventual winners Ebbsfleet United, and they also lifted the Conference League Cup. Not bad for a team that lost two of their opening three home league games!

Aldershot Town In The League

Their stay in the Football League lasted 5 seasons, during which they reached the playoffs in 2009-10 after finishing 6th. They didn’t manage another top 10 finish though, and they finished bottom in their final season, before entering administration. The fans got some consolation that season though as the club reached Round 4 of the FA Cup for the first time in their history, going down gamely 2-1 away at Championship side Middlesborough.

Conference Again

It took Altedshot a couple of seasons to recover from the effects of their administration, however, they did manage to reach the playoffs in both 2016-17 & 2017-18. Since they have struggled a bit and only Gateshead’s fall into administration saved them from relegation in 2018-19. Still, it has been quite a ride for the club’s fans and they have crammed a lot of success into their relatively short history.

They play their home games at the Recreation Ground where they have played in one guise or another since 1927, and it’s quite a nice stadium with decent facilities. There are four stands, seating 2000 and the overall capacity is 7,100. This means that outside of big cup games you should be able to get a ticket easy enough should you fancy taking in a game.
