How to apply foundation for your specific skin type

The way you apply your foundation can be make a big difference to the way your makeup last longer. For different skin types have different methods of applying foundation to make it look good.

Dry skin:

Anyone who suffers from dry skin should go towards a liquid, cream or oil foundation ands apply a moisturiser first then use their fingers or a damp beauty sponge. It will smooth over any dry patches and give a glow to the skin. Apply the foundation straight to the skin and not via brush etc.

Oily skin:

For oily skin you should use a water-based formula, powder or matte finish foundation and apply it using a foundation brush. The best brush to use is a stiff, flat and wide foundation brush.

Combination skin:

If you have combination skin it is best to use a satin finish liquid foundation and apply it with a damp sponge to get the best result. Combination skin is when you skin is partially dry or normal and oily in different areas of the skin.

Normal skin:

If you have a ‘normal’ skin type then you can choose whichever foundation you like and whatever method is easiest for you.

It is not just the technique to make sure you have right, there is also one instruction for foundation bottles that is more important than everyone first thought. This instruction is ‘shake before use’. A Reddit user, Shortline85, shared her experience and how she found out the importance the hard way.

She noticed her regular foundation by Smashbox was going orange on her skin and was oxidising instantly. She was shocked when she saw the difference of when she shaked the bottle and when she did not.

She posted photos on Reddit captioned: “I decided to shake the hell out of it and saw streaks of various colours, namely white and orange. I shook it for a long time and applied it. I don’t know if you guys can tell, but I saw a huge difference.”

“I have the Fenty foundation and I love it. It says to shake before use on the bottle. One morning I was running late and didn’t shake it too much, looked in the car mirror later that day ( the mirror of truth am I right?) and was horrified. I was orange! But I wore Fenty so many times so I knew it wasn’t right. The next day I shook the hell out of it and checked again, no Oompa Loompa for me!”

This is all down to the fact when foundation is stored it sits without movement therefore, the pigments will settle in one position affecting the overall colour of the product.

Another foundation tip is not to wait for your moisturiser to dry before applying your foundation it can create a cakey coverage. If you just apply your foundation straight after applying moisturiser with a damp makeup sponge you will get a more of a flawless base.
