Calvin Klein are closing their ready-to-wear business

The American fashion brand Calvin Klein has announced it is closing its ready to wear business. Instead, the label will focus on existing categories such as denim and underwear.

A total of 50 employees in the New York office and 50 in the Milan office have been redundant. The news follows after Calvin Klein’s creative director Raf Simons unexpected stepped down from the brand in 2018.

After Simons’ exit the company said in January that it planned to rebrand the line and was looking for a successor. Its decision to now terminate the collection entirely.

The brands most profitable categories are denim and underwear which are produced by third party licencing partners therefore this made their decision oh what should go and what should stay. Chief executive Steve Shiffman still plans to develop what the source called “aspirational” product.

Calvin Klein first began showing at New York Fashion Week in 1994. The brand instantly became known for its cool, minimalist designs and denim that helped shape the 90s fashion world. It also helped models like Kate Moss grow their careers.

A spokeswoman for Calvin Klein said the company is “not walking away” from the upscale fashion category.
