The DOs and DON’Ts of dry shampoo

Dry shampoo has been helping greasy hair days for years. It helps to disguise greasy roots and gives texture to our hair so we can last a day longer. If you are not using it correctly you may not see a difference and get unwanted build up.

Dry shampoo is the best thing for when you would rather have 5 more minutes in bed or are running late, it can be the last minute saviour of your morning.

Here are the DOs and DON’Ts of dry shampoo…

DON’T use it like the real thing!

Dry shampoo is not a cleanser or a shampoo it is simply just a powder that soaks and covers unwanted oils. Dry shampoo can dry the scalp causing reactions like dermatitis, dandruff and folliculitis (hair follicles become blocked causing infections). The only way you can remove all the dirt, oils, sweat and dead cells is by using real shampoo.

DO use it for adding volume

Dry shampoo can be used volumize the hair especially if you have thin and fine hair. To get the full effect spray it at the roots then backcomb. The easiest way to add volume is to flip your hair over so your face is looking down and spray the dry shampoo in layers of hair. Once you have done this you can flip your hair back to how it is normally and you should see a difference. The application for each layer should be light and using a small amount of product.

DON’T spray to close

It is important to spray the dry shampoo a far distance because if it is too close it can become wet and waste a lot of product.  You should have a distant of six to ten inches from the can to the hair. You should also wait one to two minutes before brushing or touching, this allow the dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.

DO brush it through

Brushing the dry shampoo in after using is important as it removes any excess product and lets it blend into your hair. Not brushing it through after a few minutes will result in you having no visible product in your hair so no one has to know you have slept in and have not had time to wash your hair…

DON’T use it all the time!

Just like your skin, your hair needs to be cleansed – it is saying “would you keep laying up makeup day after day without removing it?”. Dry shampoo will not replace shampoo forever, it is only for a one day purpose after the day you have to wash your hair. Shampoo is essential for removing dirt, bacteria and dead cells from your scalp, using dry shampoo over and over with no wash can clog up pores resulting in spots and infections. Dry shampoos are just a mask they do not clean your hair!

DO use a hair dryer

After your dry shampoo application try using a hair dryer, this will help to distribute the product away from the scalp and into mid-lengths; it also creates volume. The heat from the hair dryer will help to put the dry shampoo onto your roots making it non-greasy and adding extra volume where the hair will be flat from the grease. It also makes the product last all day.

DON’T spray just at the roots

Many people will just spray dry shampoo at the roots or at their parting but what about the rest of your hair? To get the best result you should section your hair once of twice (or more if you have thick hair) and spray the roots of all the sections. Oils can be found in between your roots and mid-length of your hair, make sure you lightly spray these parts as well if you can see grease.
