Winter Is Coming: Canada Goose or Moncler?

Winter is fast approaching, and no doubt everyone is looking for a warm coat. Canada Goose and Moncler have recently established themselves as the “best” brands in the game; but which is better?

I’m going to structure this as a courtroom debate, talking in favour and against both brands. I do have a favourite between the two; but i’m not going to let my bias influence anyone else’s opinion, I’m going to try and be as factual as possible!

In favour of Canada Goose

Canada Goose has very humble origins; it was founded by Sam Tick almost 60 years ago in a small Toronto warehouse, and has grown into one of the worlds biggest luxury apparel brands. Coats range from around £450-£1400 depending on the intended use; their coats will keep you warm from +5 degrees, down to -20 degrees. In terms of price, they are much cheaper than Moncler, for arguably better quality. There are many different steps to creating a Canada goose jacket and the process is quite long. They essentially have to make two jackets, and then stitch them together (whilst filling the coat with high quality duck down). Canada Goose use Coyote fur for the hoods as “nothing else in the world” compares to the level of protection and warmth you get when you have your hood up.

Against Canada Goose

One could argue Canada Goose is taking a similar route to Moncler; its heading away from quality and focusing more on fashion. Which could result in reduced quality and higher prices. Canada Goose have also been slammed by animal rights activists and vegans in the past, often protesting outside stores and verbally abusing people on the streets wearing the brand.

In favour of Moncler

Moncler was founded a few years prior to Canada Goose in 1952 in the Alpines of France. It is an apparel manufacturer mostly known for its outerwear and down jackets. In recent years, Moncler has become more and more popular – and is now considered one of the ultimate luxury outerwear brands in 2017. Moncler uses Japanese nylon that is very fine, so you won’t have to worry about seeing feathers coming through the stitching. Moncler’s ratio of insulative material is a 90% down and 10% feather, which they claim is the “best ratio on the market right now”. This makes for a great coat that is extremely warm, windproof, lightweight; one of the reasons why Moncler jackets are so popular.

Against Moncler

Moncler is no doubt a reputable brand that designs and produces the highest quality outdoor clothes. But when compared to Canada Goose (in terms of warmth), its kinda like dating a girls ugly cousin even though you could have had her. Canada Goose far exceeds expectations when it comes to warmth, but this is because Moncler is more of a warm “everyday” jacket. The prices are a bit extortionate at times, and one could say the brand falls into a designer clothing category, rather than a functional outwear brand. (Even though that’s what it was in the beginning).

Final Verdict

When it comes to an “everyday” coat that is light, functional, warm and stylish, go with one of the jackets Moncler has to offer. But if you live in a very cold region like Canada itself, I would recommend a Canada Goose jacket as you will undoubtedly get much more protection from all elements for a much better price.
