Gavin and Stacey: James Corden announces Christmas special

TV series Gavin and Stacey will be returning for a one-off Christmas special. James Corden has announced the news on social media. On Twitter, Corden tweeted a picture of the script, him and co-worker Ruth Jones had been “keeping this secret for a while”.

“Over the last 10 years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. So, in secret, we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special,” they said.

“We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again, and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited.”

Corden and Jones will return to their roles as Smithy and Nessa, as will Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman.

Gavin and Stacey is a Bafta-winning sitcom which is based around a long-distance relationship between a girl from south Wales and an Essex boy. Gavin and Stacey fell in love and married after speaking on the phone to each other every day after work. The TV series follows the key moments in their relationship: their first meeting, meeting each other’s families, getting engaged, marrying, looking for a flat, briefly splitting up, looking for new jobs and trying for children.

The last time it screened was in the UK in 2010. The New Year’s Day finale in 2010 had 10.25 million views.

Charlotte Moore, director of BBC Content, said: “We can’t wait to see what’s happened to everyone over the last nine years, and what’s next for one of the nation’s favourite comedy families.”
