26th July - On this Day

What does the 26th July have to offer, well on this day...

On this day the Maldives celebrate their independence day, which commemorates their independence from Britain in 1965.

It is Internation Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. The Mangroves are rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystems on the boundary between land and sea. These extraordinary ecosystems contribute to the wellbeing, food security and protection of coastal communities worldwide. They support rich biodiversity and provide a valuable nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans. The Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defence against storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels and erosion. Their soils are highly effective carbon sinks, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Adopted by UNESCO in 2015, this day seeks to raise awareness of the vulnerability of this ecosystem and ways to maintain and sustain it.
