Valentine is a contemporary poem that describes an unusual valentine days gift- an onion!
Carol Ann Duffy was born in 1955 and she is the UK’s first female poet laureate. In this poem she chooses to criticise the conventional and ditched symbols of romance and relationships realistic portrayal of a relationship (good and bad)
The form structure of the poem is very irregular or disjointed use short statement sentences that shows aggression or control. Maybe cynical that relationships/love is a positive emotion. Uses first and second person to make the poem seem personal,as if talking directly to her lover.
