The vanishing Hitchhiker is also known as “The Ghost Hitchhiker”, “The Phantom Hitchhiker” and “The Lady in White”.

The Urban Legend:

The legend starts as a newlywed couple, Nathan and Heather, were driving up the northern California coast to spend their dream honeymoon in a B&B with coastal views. They had hoped to have arrived before it got dark but heavy fog meant their journey was slow. They were an hour and a half from their destination when it became dark. They were on a road where there is narrow lanes and switchback curves.

As they were going around one of the bad curves on the road, they passed a hitchhiker; the hitchhiker was a young woman in a white dress standing on the hard shoulder with her arm out to get someone to stop.

Nathan muttered “Good luck getting a ride on a night like this,”

Heather replied, “Stop the car and turn around,”. “Please, she’s all alone. We have to give her a ride.”
“We’re two hours late.”
“Please.”

Nathan then pulled off the road and turned around, as they approached the girl from the opposite direction, they could see her dress was in shreds and her face was very pale.

“Can we give you a ride?” Heather asked as they pulled up beside her.
“Oh, thank you,” said the young woman, who appeared to be in her late teens or early twenties. “I have to get home. My parents will be worried sick.”

They then started the journey to the girl’s house. As they were driving, they tried to make conversation with her, but she fell silent and they assumed she was asleep.

After 15 minutes, Nathan asked her is this her house but got no reply. It was then Heather turned around to see that the girl was gone. They drove into the drive way of a white house. An elderly couple came out of the house and asked if they could help the newlyweds. Nathan began to tell them what had happened.

The elderly man then turned to the couple and told them they were not crazy.

He continued: “And you’re not the first. She was our daughter. Her name was Diane. She passed away seven years ago, killed by a hit-and-run driver on the highway. They never caught whoever did it. I guess her spirit won’t rest until they do.”

The couple became speechless and continued to their honeymoon destination in shock.
