Trench Foot

When it rained soldiers often spend days knee- deep in the water or mud, and this could lead to ‘trench foot’ which led many men having feet/legs amputated.

Over the Top

Attempting to take the enemies trench by leaving your own and crossing no mans land, facing a hail of machine guns bullets and metres of barbed wire.

Cooking

Cooking was very difficult in the trenches often meals consisted of bully beef and biscuits and washed down with tea.

Rat and Lice

Rats were hated thought out both enemy and friendly trenches as they grew fat of soldiers corpses some were nearly as big as cats and the trenches were swamped with them. Many solider got lice as the weeks without washing themselves or there clothes.

Effects of Shelling

Before battles began, enemy trenches were bombarded with shells from heavy guns, the aim was to kill front line troops and to tear gaps in the barbed wire that defended them.

Shell Shock

The noise of exploding shells gave many men ‘Shell shock’. It was known for being a terrible noise that drove soldiers insane.
