Boris Johnson recently announced that once we’re out of lockdown, we, as a country, will be returning to the tiered system we all know and love.

The regionalised tiers are said to be tougher than before, for the parts of the UK where coronavirus is most present.

In his own words, the PM believes that the last measures did “not do enough to reduce the R number below one.”

The news of the return of the tiered system has made people wonder – where will my area be?

Now, there aren’t too many differences between Tier 1 and 2, it’s Tier 3 where things get a bit tough, with most businesses closing if they can’t work in a contactless or remote manner, and a ban of household mixing.

Many things will be considered when putting a county or area in the highest tier, such as:

  • Coronavirus infection rate.
  • Infection rates in the most vulnerable.
  • How fast cases are rising.

The big number, the amount of cases per 100,000 is one of the biggest numbers that will be looked at. At the moment, here are the most likely places to enter Tier 3 once lockdown is over.

The figures below show the rate of new cases per 100,000 people and the new cases recorded in the seven days up to November 19 are written in brackets afterwards.

  • Hull: 568.6 (1,477)
  • Swale: 565.0 (848)
  • Thanet: 508.0 (721)
  • East Lindsey: 493.2 (699)
  • Dudley: 484.5 (1,558)
  • Stoke-on-Trent: 482.1 (1,236)
  • Hyndburn: 467.7 (379)
  • Hartlepool: 460.2 (431)
  • Boston: 450.3 (316)
  • Sandwell: 447.6 (1,470)
  • Kirklees: 446.4 (1,963)
  • Bradford: 439.3 (2,371)
  • Oadby and Wigston: 433.2 (247)
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme: 432.6 (560)
