Carlisle

Carlisle lies in the north of Cumbria and just shy of the Scottish border. Carlisle is Cumbria’s only city. Carlisle’s history is rich, and Archaeological evidence shows that the Carlisle area was established as a settlement long before England’s Roman invasion. However, because of the location of Carlise and being close to Scotland’s border, it has historically been used as a stronghold for multiple regimes and conquests throughout history.

Home to Carlisle Castle built-in 1092 by William Rufus and Carlisle Cathedral founded in 1122, these two alone serve as an excellent reason to visit Carlisle. However, there is a very long list of places to see and activities to do.

With Hadrian’s Wall and the Lake District nearby, Carlisle can serve as an excellent base to explore the surrounding areas and has some fantastic hotels and B&B’s to consider. Nearby Campsites are also available for the more outdoorsy.

Carlisle serves as a great night out in Cumbria, with many pubs, clubs and restaurants scattered throughout the city. It seems Carlisle historically has always served the purpose of being a great night out in Cumbria, so much so that in 1916 the government had to step in and take over the local pubs. The reason being that the workers in the close by Gretna Munitions factory were drinking far too heavy and therefore affected production rates.

All in all, Carlisle has a hell of a lot to offer, whether for a short or an extended stay.
