Canadian Wolves are being deployed (by helicopter) into a national park in Michigan to try and combat the overpopulation that has occurred due to a lack of canine predators! But the Wolves are also there on a second important mission. Wildlife specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF) hope their introduction will revive the island’s wolf population. The one female and three males will be joining another pair introduced last September, and the OMNRF hopes to add a further 14 to 24 to the 2,300 square kilometre island’s national park sometime over the next three to four years.

As wolves are being reintroduced to Isle Royale, the government is reconsidering their protection under the Endangered Species Act. Grey wolves have already been de-listed in Wyoming and were temporarily de-listed in the Western Great Lakes area in 2011 before being re-added in 2014.

Stay safe out there Moose.
