In a major step forward in the USA’s African Foreign policy, they have re-established their embassy in Mogadishu. This was closed in 1991 when fierce fighting caused them to airlift the staff, and a subsequent attempt at intervention in 1993 didn’t go as planned. Thus for the preceding 25 years, the US has steered clear of the country.

This was the logical follow on from them recognising the Federal Government of Somalia in 2013 and the US seems intent on helping support the Government in their strife with al-Shabab, given that the country is largely unaffected by the planned reduction in American troops in the region.
