UK rapper Stormzy has said he will donate £10m to British charities in the coming years that support anti racism.

Stormzy is of African descent, so with everything going on in the world right now, he has been touched by it. He has been seen at London BLM protests and gatherings, and has had a very educated stance on anti racism for a while now, often being vocal on twitter regarding the subject. He even worked along side a university in 2018, starting the Stormzy scholarship, for racial equality in settings such as university and school.

In a statement, Stormzy said: “The uncomfortable truth that our country continuously fails to recognise and admit, is that black people in the UK have been at a constant disadvantage in every aspect of life – simply due to the colour of our skin.

“There are millions of us. We are not far and few. We have to fight against the odds of a racist system stacked against us and designed for us to fail from before we are even born.

“Black people have been playing on an uneven field for far too long and this pledge is a continuation in the fight to finally try and even it.”

This comes as the black lives matter movement has become very vocal over the past few weeks, stemming from the death of George Floyd. Thankfully, protests in London have been quite civil since they started, and we haven’t seen the widespread looting and chaos that America has seen.

The scholarship he set up with Cambridge university was also free and non-repayable.

“I hope this scholarship serves as a small reminder that if young black students wish to study at one of the best universities in the world, then the opportunity is yours for the taking – and if funding is one of the barriers, then we can work towards breaking that barrier down,” Stormzy said.
