Should We Wear More Face Masks?

Should we all wear more face masks? This is a question being asked by a panel of WHO officials.

Officials are in conflict over whether masks are effective.

They will take into account many factors to see if face masks are a good idea or not, as a study in the USA suggests that coughs and sneezes can be projected from 6-8 meters away from a person when doing it.

The former director at the WHO explained: “The WHO is opening up its discussion again looking at the new evidence to see whether or not there should be a change in the way it’s recommending masks should be used.”

The current guidance advises keeping, at the very least, 1m away from anyone coughing or sneezing, and suggests that only those who are displaying symptoms should wear masks.

The “flimsy” masks everyone seems to be wearing do nothing filter particles, but Doctors have suggested that the masks may push the clouds of particles away from the persons face, say someone does sneeze or cough close to them.

They will also need to be worn consistently, says one official: “It’s not on to wear a mask and then decide to take it off to smoke a cigarette or eat a meal – it must be worn full time,” he said.
