Saudi Arabia is not happy (to say the least) with the US after the Senate voted to withdraw military aid for the war in Yemen. This coming on the back of them also blaming the Saudi crown prince for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was, after all, a US resident.

Sadly last Thursday’s Senate resolution is unlikely to become law, at least not this year as the House of Representatives or Donald Trump will veto it.

However, this will be seen as a stern rebuke to Donald Trump who seems to be treating the Crown Prince as his own pet despot denying the evidence and defending Saudi Arabia at every turn.

This is the first time the US Congress had agreed to pull US forces from a military conflict under the 1973 War Powers Act and next year when the Democrats formally take over control of the House next year the decision will likely become law.

The current administration continues to defend the humanitarian disaster which is the war in Yemen on the basis that the Saudi-led coalition is fighting Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. However, the truth appears more to be more about economic ties to the kingdom.
