R. Kelly has been hit with bribery charges, as a result of bribing a government official in order to get a fraudulent identification document to marry singer Aaliyah, who was under aged at the time, in 1994.
The girl was named as “Jane Doe” in the documents, but has widely been identified by US media as singer Aaliyah. They got married when she was 15 and R. Kelly was 27, but the girls name wasn’t the only thing incorrect on the certificate, it also said she was 18 years old at the time.
R Kelly has faced allegations of abuse for two decades
Court documents reportedly say the bribe was paid on 30 August 199, which happened to be just one day before R Kelly got married to Aaliyah.
Their marriage was annulled months later because Aaliyah was obviously under aged. The two singers had a close relationship, but Aaliyah unfortunately died in a plane crash in 2001. Her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, was produced and written by R. Kelly.
R. Kelly’s lawyer told ABC News that he had “no idea” Aaliyah was 15 when they married.
