The ministry of justice has said that a prison officer has had his throat cut by an inmate at HMP Nottingham.

The officer was attacked at around 10am on sunday, was rushed to hospital and needed 17 stitches. Union officials said it was an “unprovoked attack” by a prisoner with a razor blade. Prison Officers’ Association national chairman Mark Fairhurst said of the attacker: “Apparently as soon as his door was unlocked this morning, he attacked the first officer he saw with a razor blade. “At the hospital, staff said he’s lucky to be alive as it was very close to the main artery on his neck.”

The officer in question was only recently employed there and was still on his probation period.

HMP Nottingham is a category B male prison which expanded in 2010 to hold 1,060 prisoners, and Nottinghamshire Police said that the 25 year old man that committed the offence was arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.
