Peru’s Justice system is not one to cross as shown by the jailing of political opposition leader Keiko Fujimo for 3 years not for a convicted offense but while she awaits trial on alleged Corruption charges.

Peru is a pretty corrupt country at the best of times (Peru ranked Joint 96 in the latest Transparency International Corruption index), however, this could be the countries biggest ever as it involves Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht who reportedly paid out $788m overall in bribes (that’s a lot of brown paper envelopes).

However, jailing someone who has not been found guilty for three years just in case she flees the country raises questions regarding whether is politically motivated and how comes it will take so long just to bring the case to trial. Surely a case of this magnitude and international importance could be bumped up the court listings.
