After Leicester was locked down recently, it seems other areas in the UK are at risk of receiving the same fate.

PHE says that they are focusing a lot of attention on areas showing high numbers of new cases, just like Leicester was, and says these areas could also be put under restrictions in a number of “days”.

Bradford and Barnsley are the two areas just behind Leicester when it comes to cases, so they are at the most risk of a further lockdown at the moment.

However, unlike officials in Leicester who actually challenged the government to lock them down further, Barnsley officials believe a lockdown of their area is not necessary.

Barnsley’s director of public health Julia Burrows and Sir Steve Houghton said in a joint statement: “According to our most up to date data, we have seen a reduction in the number of daily new cases and in the average number of new cases for four consecutive days.

“We are continuing to monitor this and other data very closely, and to proactively manage the disease locally and in line with national guidance.

“This is why we do not believe at this stage any further measures will need to be implemented such as the ones seen in Leicester.”

Despite rising cases in some parts of the country, there are plenty of places where the virus is become uncommon. In fact, there are 3 places listed below where there are no confirmed cases of the virus anymore, proving that our efforts are effective!

So, here is PHEs full list for the number of cases per 100,000 people in each local authority area for the week ending 21 June.
