The rules for the British national lottery have changed.

Millions play the lottery every week.

For once, in the players favour too!

It’s not very often that someone wins the big jackpot, so the new rules will allow those with only 2 numbers to win £5. It’s not a crazy amount, but it’s certainly better than nothing!

The change only applies to “must be won” games, where if no one wins the top prize, it’s split between other winners – hence the name. Previous instances like this would mean cash would be awarded to people with 3 numbers, but it seems now more people have a chance at winning!

The rule will be coming into effect officially from the 7th of November this year, so until then, the rules for 2 matching numbers hasn’t changed.

Commercial director Neil Brocklehurst said: “We know an unexpected extra fiver – which could be spent on chocolates, a book, or coffee for a friend – can really put a smile on someone’s face.”

The first ever national lottery draw was in 1994, and since then millions and millions of pounds have been won by brits. The highest ever jackpot was over £170,000,000… that’s a lot of zeros!

However, you do have to be extremely lucky to win that sort of money – if not any money at all. Out of all of the games on the national lottery, you’re most likely to win the Thunderball jackpot. But even then,  the chances of that are around 8,000,000 to 1!

Still, it doesn’t hurt to put a few pounds on the lottery every week, and especially once the new rules come into place. £5? Thats lunch paid for at work for a day!
