McDonalds food prices are set to be reduced by around 10% on select items, after MP Rishi Sunak announced there will be a cut in VAT for all food and beverage businesses.

McDonalds was one of the many stores that closed in March.

Reductions are applied on certain meal bundles and classic McDonald’s menu items like the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese and six Chicken McNuggets, with a “40p reduction on Extra Value Meals menu and 30p for every Happy Meal”. However, not all items reduced on the menu are to be served at lunch and dinner, breakfast items are seeing reductions of up to 30p per item and coffees are seeing a large reduction in price too.

Brits around the country were happy to hear that meals and days out will be cheaper for the time being, in a bid to try and get the high street and hospitality sector booming once again.

McDonalds is a huge chain, but it’s also no exception, their plans to cut prices were announced recently, and when thanking staff, government and customers, the CEO of UK and Ireland Paul Pomroy said: It has been an unprecedented four months. After 45 years serving the UK, at no point did we expect to close every restaurant for any period of time.

“You may not know that in the UK, the vast majority of our 1,350 restaurants are owned and operated by individual business men and women. Our franchisees own and operate an average of six restaurants each and serve as active members in your local communities.

Together with those franchisees and the 80,000 employees who have returned to work already, we have worked hard to return to serving your favouritesin towns and cities across the country over the last four weeks.

As ever, I am incredibly proud of the way everyone in the McDonald‘s system has worked together to return quickly and safely to the communities in which we operate, from farmers and suppliers right through to our restaurant teams. I am writing to you today with our response to recent announcements from the UK Government.

“Last week’s package of business support from the Chancellor was a vital boost for our sector. Daily headlines on the challenges faced by retail and hospitality cause such uncertainty for so many.

“I am very grateful for the support from our franchisees, who balance the needs of their local businesses with that principle of returning their employees back to work and customer support; many of them have faced challenges while we were closed, and are working hard to recover their businesses.”

The chain has recently opened a select few branches to test whether it’s safe to dine inside. More are expected to be opened soon, but for the time being it’s better to be safe than sorry!

When they do reopen however, there will be a lot of measures in place to keep people safe, such as regular cleaning of facilities, hand sanitiser stations put around the shops, and social distancing markers in place, to keep people away from eachother, in line with government advice.
