Because of such a sharp rise in cases in London, the government has announced that they will be considering moving London into Tier 3.

Tier 3 is the harshest and most strict level of coronavirus measures we have in the UK, and it involves most shops closing, no household mixing, and even the ability to meet 5 other people anywhere outdoors is taken away.

Ministers and officials are said to be “deeply concerned” with the rise in cases, and that London MPs have been shown the data, despite no decision to increase the tier level (yet).

Sadiq Khan has taken a different approach however, and urged those in charge to look the situation from an economic standpoint too, saying tier 3 could have a “catastrophic consequence” on social lives, the hospitality sector and retail sector.

Health secretary Matt Hancock, who is known for having no problem imposing strict measures upon areas in the UK, will brief the country at 3:30pm today about changes in restrictions.

London now has higher rates of infection that previous hotspots, with around 506 cases per 100,000 people. This number has risen from around 170 per 100,000 people this time a month ago.

This time a month ago, Yorkshire and Humber had the most cases per 100,000 people with 443 per 100k, so you can see how fast things have changed and how fast the virus has spread in the capital.

The two areas have now switched places, with Yorkshire and Humber having around 170 cases per 100,000 people.

In other news however, COVID-19 vaccines are still being deployed, with more trust in their safety being built every day. If things continue the way they are, some normality may return by easter, according to the Prime Minister.
